| | ¹Ô¤ËÔµ nikH khaH hitL | |
| pronunciation guide | | Phonemic Thai | ¹Ô¡-¤Ð-ËÔ´ | | IPA | níkkʰáhìt | | Royal Thai General System | nikkhahit |
| | | [noun, loanword, Pali, Sanskrit]
| | definition | Anusvara; niggahita; [name of] the mark (-í) indicating nasalisation (or an unspecified nasal) of the vowel associated with the consonant (such as ÍÔ or ÍÒ becoming ÍÖ or ÍÓ respectively)
| | notes | The mark is used for writing Sanskrit or Pali, and, apart from (ÍÓ), it is not used in writing Thai.
The Pali transliteration is ng (i.e. §), the Sanskrit is m (ideally with a dot below) or ng, but both may be found. In Sanskrit, it may also indicate the nasal before a following stop consonant—in this case it is transliterated as the corresponding nasal consonant.
