พจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน ให้นิยามไว้ด้วยว่า อัญมณี คือ 1. รัตนชาติที่เจียระไนแล้ว และ 2. แก้วมณีอื่น ๆ นอกจากเพชรพลอย. ฉะนั้น หินมีค่าเหล่านี้ หากยังมิได้ผ่านการเจียระไน ก็จักต้องเรียกว่า รัตนชาติ (decorative mineral). The Royal Institute defined "อัญมณี" as 1. decorative mineral that has been cut and 2. precious stones other than diamond and gems (precious stone, jewel). Therefore, if they have not been cut yet, they have to be called รัตนชาติ (decorative mineral).
