notesLit. "basis of action", referring to a meditation object, like observing the breath going in and out (อานาปานสติ), developing loving-kindness (เมตตา ), or contemplating the three characteristics of existence (ไตรหลัก), and so on. In Buddhist scriptures there are mentioned forty such "meditation-objects".
