ชื่อสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมในวงศ์ Ursidae ตาและใบหูกลมเล็ก ริมฝีปากยื่นแยกห่างออกจากเหงือก สามารถยืนและเดินด้วยขาหลังได้ ประสาทการดมกลิ่นดีกว่าประสาทตาและหู กินพืชและสัตว์ ในประเทศไทยมี ๒ ชนิด คือ หมีควาย (Selenarctos thibetanus) ตัวใหญ่ ขนยาวดำ ที่อกมีขนสีขาวรูปง่าม และ หมีหมา หรือ หมีคน (Helarctos malayanus) ตัวเล็กกว่าหมีควาย ขนสั้นดำ ที่อกมีขนสีขาวรูปคล้ายเกือกม้า.
