The tone calculator summarizes the tone rules of the Thai language. When speaking Thai, every syllable is pronounced with one of five different tones:

• the mid (or "common," or "even") tone has an unchanging pitch during its duration
• the rising tone is spoken with rising pitch
• the falling tone is spoken with falling pitch
• the low tone has a lower than usual pitch
• the high tone is higher than usual and falls off quickly at the end

It is essential to listen to and imitate native Thai speakers to discern the correct qualities of the tones. The proper tone for a given syllable is determined by the consonants and vowels that make up the syllable, and a tone mark, if any, which appears above the syllable.
