Reading Exercise: Culture » The Remains of Monuments

Adapted from “Matichon Weekend,” volume 26 June – 2 July 2563 (2020), by Nithi Eoseewong, Title, “The Remains of Monuments”

phohmR daiF dtaaeL aanL khaaoL gaanM lohmH lohngM aL nooH saaR waH reeM thangH naiM aL maehM riH gaaM yooH ro:hpL laeH aaefL riH gaaM bpaiM reuuayF dooyM maiF ruuH seukL aL raiM johnM graL thangF khaoR yohkH aoM aL nooH saaR waH reeM khaanM theeM aawkL theeF maH haaR witH thaH yaaM laiM khaaM naaM
I have been reading the news about the toppling of the monuments in American, Europe, and Africa continuously without any reaction, until they unseated the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at University of Ghana.
laeH thamM thaaF jaL yohkH aawkL jaakL baangM meuuangM naiM angM gritL duayF nanF laeL
And there was movement to remove some statues from several places in England.
phohmR jeungM reermF dtohkL jaiM johnM hanR maaM khitH waaF geertL aL raiM kheunF waH
It was then that I became frightened and wondered what the hell was going on.
khrapH phohmR napH theuuR khaanM theeM maaeH ruuH deeM waaF khaoR bpenM maH nootH thamM maH daaM
Yes, I respect Gandhi, even though I know full well that he was just an ordinary person.

Furthermore, I don’t really agree with him that the economic policy of “sufficiency” should have been implemented once India gained its independence.
maaeH yaawmM rapH saawngR yaangL
Even so, we have to admit two things.
kheuuM neungL naH yo:hM baaiM neeH meeM phaH langM suungR maakF naiM gaanM ruaamM khohnM inM diiaM thookH wanM naH khaoF duayF ganM pheuuaF saangF amM naatF dtaawL raawngM gapL jaoF aaM naaM niH khohmM
First, this policy has been very powerful in bringing together the Indian people of every caste so as to create bargaining power with its colonizer.
laeH saawngR naH yo:hM baaiM neeH saawtL khlaawngH gapL lakL gaanM aL hingR saaR khaawngR khaoR
And, second, this policy is in harmony with their principle of nonviolence.
phrawH gaanM phaL litL naiM raH bohpL saehtL thaL gitL phaawM phiiangM baaepL khaoR biiatL biianM thamM maH chaatF satL euunL laeH maH nootH duayF ganM naawyH theeF sootL
[This is] because production under their version of sufficiency economics was the least exploitive of nature, other animals, and their fellow human beings.
dtaaeL bpenM bpaiM maiF daiF theeF jaL thaawyR inM diiaM seungF pheerngF lootL jaakL angM gritL glapL bpaiM saawngR phanM bpeeM
However, it is impossible that [this policy] pushed India—which had just freed itself from England—back 2,000 years.
naawkF jaakL neeH jaL meeM khohnM sohmR buunM phraawmH naiM lo:hkF neeH reuuR
Furthermore, is it even possible to have a perfect person in this world?
haakL chaiH maatF dtraL thaanR sohmR buunM phraawmH jaL maiF meeM aL nooH saaR waH reeM bookL khohnM leuuaR waiH sakL theeM haengL thuaaF lo:hkF
If the standard we employ is “perfection”, there would be no monuments to individual persons remaining in the world.
yingF bpaiM gwaaL neeH singL theeF riiakF waaF sohmR buunM reuuR khoonM naH khaaF reuuR khwaamM deeM nanH yangM kheunF gapL gaaM laH laeH thaehM saL yaangL yingF
Not only this, the [traits] which we call “perfection” or “values” or “goodness” is highly dependent on time and circumstances.
maawngM jaakL yooH ro:hpL singL theeF khohnM aehM chiiaM theuuR waaF bpraL seertL gaawF glaaiM bpenM khwaamM maiF rapH phitL chaawpF
Viewed from a European perspective, that which Asians believe to be “excellent” is regarded as “irresponsible”.
naiM thaangM glapL ganM maawngM jaakL moomM euunL gaawF aatL maiF leuuaR aL raiM theeF bpenM khoonM naH khaaF saaR gohnM laeH thaaR waawnM sakL yaangL diaaoM
On the other hand, when viewed from other perspectives, there may be no universal permanent values remaining.
gaanM waehM laaM theeF bpraaeM phanR gaawF thamM haiF maiF leuuaR khwaamM naaeF naawnM aL raiM naiM lo:hkF neeH ruaamM thangH khwaamM deeM duayF
Changing times cause a loss of certainty in this world, including our [view about] goodness.
duayF haehtL dangM nanH aL nooH saaR waH reeM thookH chaH nitH maiF waaF jaL yuuL naiM ruupF bookL khohnM aaM khaanM ruupF khaoM rohpH reuuR saL thaanR theeF yaawmF thaaH thaaiM gaanM waehM laaM laeH lo:hM gaaM phiH watH raH dapL dtaangL dtaL laawtL bpaiM
For this reason, all types of monuments, whether they be statues of people, buildings, icons and idols, or particular sites perpetually challenge our times and various levels of globalization.
johnM gwaaL manM jaL glaaiM bpenM bo:hM raanM watH thooL reuuR bo:hM raanM saL thaanR
[This challenge continues] until these [monuments] become ancient artifacts or archeological sites.
seungF bpeertL dtohnM aehngM haiF gwaangF phaawM jaL saiL khwaamM maaiR daiM lohngM bpaiM daiF yaangL saehR reeM
[At that time, they] open themselves broadly enough to freely attribute any meaning to them at all.
meuuaF nanH aL nooH saaR waH reeM jeungM meeM khwaamM khohngM thohnM pheermF kheunF dtaaeL gaawF suunR siiaR bohtL baatL khaawngR aL nooH saaR waH reeM bpaiM johnM thaaepF mohtL
At that time these monuments will have greater permanence, but the function of these monuments will be virtually lost.
