[นาม]	ชื่อผีเสื้อชนิด Bombyx mori ในวงศ์ Bombycidae ตัวอ้วนป้อม มีขนสีขาวคล้ายสีครีมคลุมเต็ม ปีกมีลายเส้นสีน้ำตาลอ่อนพาดตามขวางหลายเส้น ตัวหนอนสีขาวหรือสีครีม มีรยางค์เล็กๆ สั้นๆ คล้ายเขาที่ปลายหาง กินใบหม่อนได้อย่างเดียว เมื่อโตเต็มที่จะถักใยหุ้มดักแด้ ซึ่งใยนี้สามารถสาวเป็นเส้นไหมนำมาทอเป็นเสื้อผ้าได้, ใยของสัตว์ชนิดนี้ ก็เรียกว่า ไหม.
