| notes | This word is often cited as an example of two possible and two common pronunciations. In the first pronunciation, there is no issue, mid tone, short vowel; mid tone, long vowel. The second method of pronunciation has three syllables: mid tone, short vowel; high tone, short vowel; mid tone, long vowel. Note also that the audio recording demonstrates the common substitution of ล for ร, which occurs in casual conversation, as shown here: พะ ลิ ยา. Finally, although the formal prounciation is given as "พัน ระ ยา" with an /-n/ sound ending the first syllable, one almost never hears this affectation except in formal settings. -D.R. | ||
